I will bash this over the head of every marketer and social media manager until the message seeps in: making short form content is a reality that businesses - big and small - need to accept. More than that, the marketers within those businesses need to embrace short form. They must shift their thinking from long-form to content under 60 seconds.
Your audience are dopamine addicts. They come to Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for their quick fix. You need to figure out away to give them what they want. The good news is that you don’t have to create short form content from scratch (although you should do that, too). You can simply repurpose your old content, e.g., your long-form YouTube videos, into short, engaging snippets.
But how can I repurpose my old content without spending hours clipping and editing old videos?
With a nifty AI video editor, of course!
This is the part where I talk about one possible solution: Opus Clip.
I tried it out and here’s my honest review of the business, including its strengths and weaknesses, along with a recommendation for an Opus Clip alternative.
What is Opus Clip?
Opus Clip is an AI video repurposing tool that ‘turns long videos into shorts, and publishes them to all social platforms in one click.’ By their own account, if making short-form content from long-form is your goal, then Opus Clip AI could be a great option because it should make life more efficient for marketer and content creators.
Opus Clip’s core features
It generates automated captions
Opus Clip’s AI generates captions for your videos autoamtically. Captions in your videos are important for accessibility, largely due to the fact that your audience consumes social media content without sound more often than you think. By generating the captions for you, it also you saves time because you won’t need to generate them yourself on each platform. However, the captions generated can be inaccurate, depending on speaker clarity and audio quality.
It finds what makes your video interesting
While not an exact science, Opus Clip AI tried to identify which moments in your video have X factor. It analyzes camera angles, action moments, dialogue, and changes in emotion. It’s a helpful feature for curating a selection.
But will it go viral?
Your curated clips are judged by Opus Clip AI and given a virality score, predicting their likelihood of exploding on social media and earning you a raise (WE DID IT, MOM!). It sounds exciting but marketers worth their grain in salt understand that the elusive temptress virality cannot be so easily defined. In fact, users have reported that their lvideos with low scores outperformed those with high scores.
Pricing
Opus Clip offers 3 pricing tiers depending on whether you’re a casual creatoror marketer.
The Free version has limited features, capping your monthly processing minutes at 60, i.e., 60 credits. 1 minute = 1 credit. It also includes use of the captions feature and auto reframing. However, your videos will be watermarked. It’s an ideal plan for those looking to dip their toe in the water before comitting to some of the beefier options. We recommend trying the free version before committing to anything long term.
The Starter version is priced at $15 p/m and increases your monthly processing minutes from 60 to 150, opens access to the AI video editor, and exports videos without watermarks. You also have access to AI clipping and virality scoring. This plan is likely suitable for small, individual content creators.
The Pro version ramps up the monthly cost to $29 and increases processing minutes X24 up to a total of 3600. You’ll also get access to multiple aspect ratios, AI B-roll, and the ability to export to social media platforms and Adobe Premiere Pro. When compared with the starter version, it becomes apparent that most content creators will need to consider the Pro plan, as the starter version just doesn’t have sufficient features.
Opus Clip also has a Business version that can be customized to your needs, though you need to contact them directly for a detailed breakdown of costs and features.
Who is Opus Clip for?
If you’re a casual content creator, a marketer that needs to produce a few social media posts a week, or a larger team that churns our repurposed clips regularly and wants to streamline that process, Opus Clip AI might be the tool for you. You can focus solely on producing long form and rest assured that Opus Clip can chop it up into bite sized clips for quick consumption. Whether those videos will go viral is another story. It is important to note that the tool’s value lies in repurposing existing content alone. It is not the total package if looking at marketing video production through a larger lens.
What is the Opus Clip process?
Opus Clip does one thing well: repurposing content.
Their process is simple:
You upload your long-form video to the platform.
Opus Clip AI analyzes the content and curates a selection of video clips.
You review the clips, check their virality scores, and refine your selections with the editing tool.
You export your clip(s) to your social media channel(s).
We signed up to Opus and noted each step in order to report a comprehensive account for you.
Step by step Opus Clip walkthrough
Creating an account
The sign up process was lightning quick. What made it particularly seamless was that it did not ask for credit card info. I was also given 90 credits rather than 60.
We’re off to a great start.
Uploading a video
Next, I was met with a screen encouraging me to drop a video link in order to ‘get clips in 1 click’. To both amuse myself and abide by the Opus Clip AI recomendations, I opted for a 20 minute Creatify review video on YouTube (surprise, surprise).
Processing
My frist project began processing.
ETA to completion: 9 minutes.
In the meantime, I was prompted to answer a few questions to fine tune the AI (though, I suspect it’s to gather demographical data). One issue was that I couldn’t scroll to fully view my options on mobile. A minor inconvenience.
Viewing my clips
I liked the presentation of all the clips on mobile. It was easy to scroll and see all the curated clips. Each clip incuded a number, a suggested title, a transcript, and a virality score. My first video had a whopping 99 virality score, which I found interesting, given the clip was 2 minutes 51 seconds. While long form content has certainly increased in popularity on TikTok, it’s still second to shorter content on Instagram.
Editing the video
The captions generated were almost perfect, with very minor changes needed. It helped that the video uploaded included a well-spoken gentleman with excellent sound equipment, so it would be interesting to see how Opus Clip AI fares with a video of lesser quality. One inconvenience was the the video I uploaded already had subtitles, so Opus Clip AI overlayed their captions over the preexisting captions, which looks a little messy.
I wasn’t able to edit the video on mobile, as the feature is unavailable.
Downloading
I had the option to download my video in HD, which took about 2 minutes. The video looked good.
Publishing to social media
In order to publish to Instagram, I needed to have an account that was either a business or creator account and it needed to be associated with a Facebook page. I wasn’t bothered going through all those steps so I tried uploading to other platforms instead. When trying Facebook, the app froze and failed, so I opted for TikTok instead.
The recommended copy was helpful, albeit, nothing remarkable, and certainly included too many hashtags. I scheduled the post to go out almost immediately, though was redirected to the pricing page, with no clear instructions on whether the post had been scheduled or not.
Opus Clip pros
Speedy sign-up
The registration process was lightning quick and asked for no credit card details.
Uploading looks neat
The bar to upload a video URL was dynamic, switching between encouraging you to upload a Twitch video, to a YouTube video, and so on. It was enticing and made me want to test it.
Curating and clipping
Opus Clip’s ability to curate a selection of clips from your uploaded video and recommend titles is very useful for content creators that need to repurpose en masse.
Virality scoring
I’m not sure on whether it’s acurate or from where it gets its data, but the simple fact of seeing a score alongside your repurposed clips is pleasing.
An option to publish to social media
The platform makes it easy to share your clips directly to social media platforms, although it was a little buggy on mobile. If set up correctly, it removes the need to ever need to leave Opus Clip.
Opus Clip cons
No answer for overlapping captions
Uploading a long form video with pre-existing captions causes a clash. Opus Clip AI overlay their own captions, and the result is a messy video.
Lengthy processing time
It took about 11 minutes for the AI to chop up and produce repurposed content for 1 video.
Limited caption styles
The options for customizing caption styles are somewhat limited.
Bugs uploading to social media
On mobile, I experienced issues uploading content to Facebook, TikTok, and X, so the feature may not be all that useful.
Interface bugs
There were moments during the process where I couldn’t scroll to view text or interact with elements.
Unclear publishing
I schedued my video to TikTok and was redirected to a pricing page. The second time I published it immediately and was taken back to the project page. Neither times did my video upload to TikTok.
Opus Clip verdict
Opus Clip excels at its primary function: turning long-form content into short clips. The Opus Clip AI content curation is handy, and the virality scoring adds a flair to the videos produced. For content creators and small teams focused solely on repurposing, it's a solid tool that shines in its simplicity. The straightforward process, quick setup, and intuitive interface make it accessible for a specific niche of marketers and content creators.
However, successful video marketing requires more than just content repurposing. While Opus Clip handles its core functionality well, performance marketers might find themselves wanting more robust features. Smart marketing video production requires creative customization, advanced editing capabilities, and data driven marketing intelligence.
Think of OpusClip as a reliable specialist rather than a full-service video marketing solution. It's perfect for those specific moments when you need to quickly repurpose long videos into social snippets, but marketers seeking a complete video marketing toolkit might want to explore platforms that offer smarter features and creative capabilities.
Creatify as an Opus Clip alternative
Is Creatify better than Opus Clip?
While OpusClip is a solid tool with excellent content repurposing capabilities, Creatify offer more comprehensive video creation features, including its own version of Opus Clip AI repurposing: AI editing. However, it is its video ad generator and features like Batch Mode and Design your own avatar that make it a strong Opus Clip alternative, particularly for marketers needing a complete marketing video production suite.
Creatify’s AI is trained on successful ads
Most marketers are quite creative and reckon they can produce a winning ad off the top of their heads. They’re not wrong… but they are, most of the time. At the foundation of every good ad is data to guide your creative process. Creatify’s AI is trained on strong ads, so you can focus on what matters: strategy.
You can design your own AI infleuncer
Infleuncers are expensive. Why not deisng your own - or even feature in the videos yourself! The first option gives you the power to create an AI avatar: their look, background, clothing, etc; the second, encourages you to upload a video of yourself which is infused with superhuman AI abilities. Now you have a clone of yourself to feature in your business’ videos! Both options give you a brand ambassador to feature in your video ads, product demonstration videos, internal communications - you name it!
You can produce hundreds of video ad variations - in a day
Creatify enables performance marketers to scale their marketing video production like crazy thanks to Batch Mode. Upload your product URL, select from a variety of scripts, avatars, and video formats, and wait for your videos to process. Marketers love to split test, and Creatify is a cost efficient, time saving assistant.
The editor is smarter
Compared to Opus Clip's limited editing capabilities, Creatify offers flexible scene customization, streamlined editing, and professional-grade templates. And I hear there’s improvements on the way… (you didn’t read it from me).
Here’s a table illustrating some of Opus Clip and Creatify’s key differences:
If you’re a peformance marketer or running an ecommerce store and need marketing video production that is trained on what works, that is scalable, and that keeps getting better - try Creatify.
