Here's how to make a GIF from video, quickly and easily. In this video, I'm gonna show you exactly how to create a GIF animation, using my number one GIF maker app. And this video-to-GIF process works on almost any device, and it's completely free.
GIF Creation Options
Now, since the last time we made a video like this, there are so many more options out there to help you create GIFs. It's a feature in lots of video editing programs, and apps, and even popular design tools like Canva, which makes the process fairly easy to do. So after trying, and testing all the top options, the service and app that I recommend is Giphy.
Why Giphy?
Giphy is not only a huge searchable library of GIFs for you to download, use, and share, but it also has a really powerful GIF creation tool too. It’s free, works on both desktop and mobile, and is easy to use. So I'm gonna show you how easy it is to convert your videos to GIFs on both platforms.
Giphy Features
Not only can you make GIFs that you can download, save to your computer, or share to your phone, but you can also store them on the Giphy platform as well, which makes them much easier to access wherever you are. If you apply for a brand or artist account on Giphy, you can also get your GIFs showing up in things like Instagram when you're adding GIFs to your posts.
Process on Mobile App (iPhone)
Now, I’ll show you the process using the mobile app first, and then we’ll jump over to desktop. I’ll be using an iPhone, but the process is nearly identical on Android as well. Open the Giphy app, and right away, you’ll see all the trending GIFs on the platform. At the bottom, you can search for GIFs and access your account if you choose to set one up. For this tutorial, I’m not signed in, so you can use the app totally for free, without creating an account.
Creating a GIF
To make a GIF, tap on the "create" button in the top right corner, which has a plus symbol. You can record a GIF directly into the app using your phone’s camera, or you can import a video from your phone that you want to convert by using the button in the bottom left to import it.
Editing Features
Now, at the bottom, you’ll see options to create a GIF, a sticker, or add animated text. We’re going to leave it on GIF, but there are different filters and effects you can apply by swiping across the bottom if you wish.
Background Removal Feature
On the iPhone app, there’s an extra feature that isn’t available on Android. This feature removes the background from your video, so you can overlay yourself onto a trending GIF. You can make yourself smaller, add gestures, or overlay your image onto the GIF in a creative way. I’ll cancel this out for now and show you a simpler method.
Creating a Simple GIF
For simplicity, let’s create a basic GIF. Press and hold the record button, and make a simple "yes" GIF.
Trimming the Video
Next, trim your video by tapping the scissors icon at the bottom. Adjust the start and end times of your recording so you get only the part you want. I’ll remove the initial part and trim the end as well to create a focused, excited "yes" moment.
Cropping and Resizing the GIF
Now that we have the trimmed video, we can crop or resize it. Tap on the crop button in the top right corner, and you can choose from different ratios: 1:1, 3:2, 16:9, 4:5, and 9:16. These different sizes help you tailor the GIF for different social media platforms. The standard sizes are 1:1 and 3:2, so I’ll go with the 1:1 ratio for this one. You can also zoom in or adjust the framing of your video within this crop tool.
Adding Text to the GIF
Next, tap on the "two As" icon at the bottom to add text to your GIF. You can type something in, like "Yes," and add a couple of exclamation marks. There are plenty of preset styles, but I’ll keep it simple and go with the default option. Tap "done" when you're happy with your text.
Customizing Text and Adding Effects
You can move the text around, resize it, and rotate it to get the exact look you want. You can also add various effects and stickers from the bottom toolbar. You can manipulate the layers, reposition them, and customize the look to match your vision.
Saving or Sharing the GIF
When you’re happy with your GIF, tap the arrow icon in the bottom corner to proceed. You can either copy the GIF to your phone, save it as a video or GIF file, or share it directly through Instagram, Messenger, or other social platforms.
Process on Desktop
Now, let’s move over to desktop. Head to giphy.com and click on the "Create" button at the top right corner. It will look very similar to the app. You can upload your video or image files to create your GIF. Once uploaded, you can start editing and customizing your GIF as you would on mobile.
