Best AI Summarizer for Text and Videos in 2024

Nov 15, 2024

In today's article, I want to show you an AI tool that can analyze very large files. I actually downloaded the book War and Peace, which is over a thousand pages long, and this AI tool can analyze it and even allow you to chat with the document.

Limitations of AI Summarizer Tools

Usually, if you use a chatbot like ChatGPT, you have a little attached file icon inside your chat. However, this comes with limitations on how large a file can be and how many files you can upload. All AI tools have limitations, but today I want to show you an AI tool with the highest limits, far higher than ChatGPT.

Introducing Google’s AI Tool: Gemini 1.5 Pro

This tool comes from Google and you can access it at aistudio.google.com. Simply log in with your Google account. Once you're in, look under the Models tab where you’ll find Gemini 1.5 Pro. Under this, you'll see something called token count that says 2 million tokens. A token is roughly equivalent to a single English word, so this means you can upload documents containing millions of words.

Uploading Large Documents to Google AI Studio

There’s a website called Project Gutenberg that offers free books you can download. I downloaded War and Peace, which is well over half a million words and over a thousand pages long. I saved it as a PDF file.

To upload it to Google AI Studio, follow these steps:

  1. Click the plus sign in the Google AI Studio interface.

  2. Connect to your Google Drive, as you must upload documents there first.

  3. Click Upload to Drive and browse to select your document.

After uploading, the AI tool will process the document. You’ll notice on the right side that the document is now 92,000 tokens. No other AI chatbot, including ChatGPT and Claude, can process a file this large.

Chatting with Your Document

Once the file is uploaded, you can interact with it directly. For example, I asked for a one-page summary of War and Peace. This might take a little time, but the AI successfully generated the summary in about 30 seconds. Here’s an example of the summary I received: "War and Peace is set in Russia during Napoleon's reign."

Mid-Document Queries

Next, I wanted to ask a specific question about the content. I inquired, "Which year did Prince Andrew arrive at Petersburg?" The AI was able to pull the correct year—1809—from the middle of the document. This is a significant achievement, as many AI chatbots struggle to access information in the middle of long documents.

Limitations of AI Tools

While the AI tool performed well, it’s important to note that AI is not always perfect. There are issues like hallucinations, where the AI may provide incorrect or made-up information. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your results.

Gemini 1.5 Pro's Token Limit and Its Capabilities

Gemini 1.5 Pro inside Google AI Studio is the only AI tool currently capable of processing documents over a thousand pages long, like War and Peace, or any large file. This makes it one of the most powerful tools for working with large amounts of text.

Working with Different Media Types

One exciting feature of Google AI Studio is that it can also analyze videos. I tested this by adding a 30-minute video from the American Museum of Natural History tour. The AI processed both this video and the War and Peace document, allowing me to work with a combination of the two. This is just one example of how the AI tool can help you analyze a mix of different media types, like long documents and videos, simultaneously.

Practical Use Case

One of the best use cases for AI is quickly processing massive amounts of information that would take days to go through manually. This AI tool can sift through books, videos, and other large files with ease, helping you extract key insights in minutes.

How to Summarize YouTube Videos Quickly and Customizable Using Glasp

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to summarize a YouTube video, you're going to love this video! I found a tool that not only summarizes YouTube videos fast and for free, but also allows you to customize the information you get. Let me show you how it works.

Introducing the Glasp - AI YouTube Video Summarizer Extension

The tool I'm using is called Glasp, and it’s a YouTube summary extension available for Chrome and Safari browsers. I personally use Chrome, but it works just as well on Safari. It's completely free and easy to install. Once you get it set up, it’s incredibly powerful.

How to Use the Glasp Extension

Once you install the extension, you'll see the Glasp icon appear at the top of your video. Now, all you need to do is click on it, and it will automatically summarize the video with the default settings. I forgot what the default settings are, but they work great right out of the box.

Customizing Your Video Summaries

When you click the Glasp icon, it will transcribe the video and display a summary, complete with time codes. It also supports transcription in different languages, though I only use English, so that’s the language I have set.

To customize the summary, click on the gear icon to open the settings window. This is where the magic happens. You can adjust settings like:

  • Theme: Choose between light or dark mode.

  • Model: Select from various models, including a custom GPT model. I usually stick with ChatGPT since it’s free, but you can experiment with others.

  • Language: You can set the default language for the transcription and summary.

  • Custom Prompts: This is where Glasp really stands out. You can create custom prompts for the AI to follow.

For example, I’ve created several prompts, such as:

  • Summarize the video for a sixth-grade audience.

  • Suggest five YouTube video titles.

  • Write a short blog post (max 350 words) based on the video.

  • Create a short YouTube description (two sentences max).

  • Write a short email blast (no more than 200 words).

How to Generate Custom Summaries and Content

Once you've set up your custom prompts, head back to the video and click on the Glasp extension icon again. This will launch the transcription and summary process, and the tool will follow the prompts you’ve set.

You’ll see the AI working through each prompt:

  1. Summarizing the video for a sixth-grade audience.

  2. Providing YouTube title suggestions.

  3. Writing a short blog post.

  4. Creating a YouTube description.

  5. Writing an email blast.

All of this comes from just the transcription of the video! You can then copy and paste this content into apps like Apple Notes, Google Drive, Google Docs, or anything else you prefer.

Customizing and Reusing Prompts

If you want to customize the prompts even further, you can change them at any time. For example, I’ve changed some prompts to ask for thumbnail suggestions or additional content ideas.

I recommend copying and pasting your list of prompts somewhere so you can easily pop them into the settings as needed. If you'd like to use the exact prompts I’ve created, I’ll include them down below in the description.
